Norwegian Cruise Line's BookSafe Travel Protection Plan

Others require the purchase of coverage a certain number of days before departure. Read the fine print to find out the deadline to purchase and the specifics of its coverage. On the topic of cancelations, it's on the individual to assess whether they want to purchase travel insurance or not.

What does cruise travel insurance cover typically?

All guests are advised to monitor and comply with applicable travel restrictions. Unfortunately, there often aren't explicit statements about what is "not" covered; it's just by omission... If your air and/or hotel is arranged by Norwegian Cruise Line, it’s covered under BookSafe. In short, don't like their answer(s) or disagree with their scripted response, hang up, wait and do a quick fact-checking yourself, call again and there is a good chance for getting a different response. This seemed to be fairly consistent and inline with some of the other feedbacks lately of NCL customer services being all over the place.

Cancellation fees will be assessed based on the total advertised price, minus the Government Taxes & Fees

(but does cover trip delay)  I'm trying to figure out why someone would be interested in just trip delay but not cancellation. I dont think it has enough medical coverage for the purpose you give. I was wondering about the scenario where trip delay (and other events after you board, other than medical) would be desirable but not trip cancellation before the trip. I'm sure there are situations or it wouldnt be an option. I believe the essentials coverage starts at the time you board. So, it includes none of the travel to the port, or any trip cancellation.

It's Finally Time to BREAK FREE

Air ambulance service can be many tens of thousands more than that. Then call one of the places above and say, “What I am really looking for is protection if there is a snowstorm and my flight is cancelled, since I'm cruising in February.” They will tell you what you need. I used them this past summer and the price for 4 people was very reasonable.

NCL's Essentials' coverage seems a bit low for medical evacuation. It's better than nothing, but it's basically going to cover you if you get the flu and have to go to the medical center, that's about it. Personally, I would agree with other folks here and check InsureMyTrip instead. As delivering the best experience for our guests is always a top priority, after working closely with our destination partners, we anticipate that guests will be free to explore certain ports of call on their own.

Many of those cover pre-existing conditions and waiver the lookback period if the policy is bought ithin a certain amount of time after first payment. I have GeoBlue with pre-existing conditions covered without a lookback period for my next trip. I got $500,000 medical expenses, $500,000 evacuation plus pre-existing condition coverage for $83 for a 5 day cruise. Like you I am also mainly interested in medical coverage, medical evacuation and in my case, pre-existing conditions. Another thing I learned and this is a little off the topic of this post but worthwhile to know.

Maybe we've been lucky, over 30 cruises and never had to cancel yet. So the extra money that insurance would have cost (say $200 per cruise) has gone towards future cruises. Guests requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test to return to their home country are directed to visit a clinic near the disembarkation terminal or airport. For an easy to use online tool for locating COVID-19 testing providers around the world, please visit Onboard medical consultations and standard treatments are provided for COVID-19-related illness at a charge. We will comply with all local regulations at all destinations we visit.

Long story short, this was offered to them last October and they purchased it as add-on, long after final payment but before they sailed. Email pushed out to them again last week, inside the 30 days mark to call, buy & add. We need to have Pre-existing conditions covered and most insurance policies require payment within 2 or 3 weeks of booking for that. You should check the terms of insurance with any of the companies that you may purchase coverage from to see the latest you can purchase insurance.

New law forces Carnival Cruise Line to change advertised price for cruises

My dad actually got sick and went into hospice 2 days before we were supposed to go on our cruise. Took some time and paperwork but didn't lose all my money. The brands will follow this advertising requirement for all consumer advertising throughout the U.S. and Canada to avoid confusion regardless of where the traveler is trying to sail.

Squaremouth has a very useful website for comparing policies. Many here recommend the Trip Insurance Store, likely for many good reasons. It allows quick selections of desired coverages and comparisons of policies available through many insurance companies. My main criteria are a) robust emergency medical and medivac and b) minimum pre-existing condition lookback (I buy those with only a 60 day lookback). Depending on your needs and how many times you travel a year, you might be better off with an annual insurance policy. I have an annual policy with Allianz for 2 people, it has great medical coverage and covers all trips including flights within 365 days.

I am willing to self-insure my trip costs, although the annual Allianz plan does cover $5000 in cancellation annually, any reason. One benefit that cruise travel insurance policies offer that credit cards don't is the ability to cancel for any reason. Although you may not get back 100% of the cruise price, these policies allow you to cancel for any reason and get a portion of the price back as a credit toward a future trip.

"Self insuring" is also a thing many people do if losing the $50k isn't that big of a deal. I took a look at the standard BookSafe policy on the NCL website. It includes $20k medical, $25k medical evacuation, and $5k for repatriation of remains if you die while traveling. A September 2022 survey of 737 past cruisers by InsureMyTrip found that the average trip cost for an insured cruise vacation so far this year is $6,367, an increase of nearly 15% from before the pandemic.

If your home is made uninhabitable due to fire, flood, volcano, earthquake, hurricane or other natural disaster, the plan provides Trip Cancellation/Interruption coverage should you need to cancel or interrupt your trip. If “acts of God” such as inclement weather occur and you are delayed in starting your trip, the plan reimburses up to $500 under Trip Delay for additional meals, lodging and transportation expenses to catch up to your cruise. Offered on MyNCL, it looks like a good deal at only $25 per person. I assume it doesn't not cover cancellation, which is the expensive part of trip insurance.

Standalone travel insurance policies can be purchased to cover one person or a family for a specific trip or multiple trips within a period of time. These policies are available at a variety of price points to meet a traveler's budget. When comparing policy options, you can balance price versus coverage options. If you already have a standalone travel insurance policy or a credit card with travel protections, you may wonder if you need to purchase a cruise travel insurance policy. Can you buy travel insurance after booking a cruise? Some cruise lines require the purchase of a travel insurance policy before the final payment date when charges become nonrefundable.
